The Desi Awards
Desi Awards 2010 winners announced!
The votes are in and the results compiled for the most interesting run of the Desi Awards yet. Congratulations to the winning poet Rabab Khan and the winning writer Priyanka!
Our members were given a list of topics and told to do whatever they pleased with them. At one entry per person, each participant could write poetry or prose, with no limit on length. The only condition was that the chosen topic had to feature in the written piece, word for word.
The complexity of this task becomes clearer once you read the list of topics:
The Plague & Other Love Stories
Learning to Drown
The Nurses Station
A Divorce Most Unusual
The Closet Came Alive at Midnight
Don't Hang Up
The Stove Circle
The Story of Six
Most of the contestants did a superb job of interpreting the titles in unusual ways and putting together pieces that were both intriguing as well as coherent. Entries were judged on the basis of originality and theme, language and imagery, structure, overall impact and execution. Writers’ names were withheld from judges to ensure impartiality.
The winner of the competition will be awarded a certificate and will sport a forum medal on the DWL community. More significantly, the winning entry will be printed in Papercuts, the Desi Writers Lounge online magazine, and will automatically be in the running for our first offline publication.
We hope to make the Awards an annual feature to encourage more amateur writers to go head to head and put their skills to the test!
