Okay, so I did look into that. It's possible but only for quoting code (like programming code) so doesn't really suit our purposes. Obi, I'll get us new smileys soon.

Also, just wanted to let the DWL Millenials and soon-to-be's that I've upgraded their "package", so to speak. So not only do you get your lovely golden stars, but the same color shows up when you're online. As in, when you're online, your name shows up in a goldeny yellow. I've assigned the appropriate colors for all the levels that follow (DWL Platinum & Multi-Platinum in turquoise and red, respectively). Figure those levels should be something to reach for, after all! Smiley

Address this to Imaginary, perhaps? Instead of in this thread?

Not appropriate topic, Clarice. You could've just pm'd me and I'd have taken care of it. What exactly is happening? It might just be that there've been so many unread topics since your last visit, that it can't even display it? Cheesy

Suggestion - an anonymous co0mment leaving thing along with the votes? I've got no votes on my poems which have otherwise got positive responses. I know we've been trying to encourage people to critique along with vote, but since its not working, maybe we can have an anonymous comment thing so that whoever votes no can give reasons without worrying about sounding like a jerk/hurting feelings etc. Legit reasons of course, the help the writer improve his/her work. I think it'd make for more honest critique (not to say that critique isnt honest, but that a lot of people dont say anything if they find something is blleh while others like it).

What say all?

I dont know...

I feel its important to put a name to an opinion.
Atleast you know what he/she is thinking.

Critique is often harsh.

Anonymous posting can lead to nastiness,
and it shifts the focus away from the object of the exercise

Instead of focusing on the critique, the person ends up being more curious about who posted it,
and the vengefulness begins.

Imaginary, the reason your poem hasn't been voted on is because the poll was set up yesterday. Smiley Give it some time; other pieces have been voted and critiqued as the polls have been set up. So we're relatively safe in that regard.

There's a lot of time from now to April 15 when the polls close, and besides critique is still the hallmark of our existence, and pieces have been critiqued especially by our newer members.

Not sure about the anonymity of things; we have to build a safe and comfortable environment for all our members. Allowing them the comfort of remaining anonymous is giving them too much liberty, and taking the load off of us to create an acceptable place to exist as writers.

Also agree with Bats, above.

By no votes I meant votes against it. I realize that didn't come through. I see your point though. It's just frustrating to see a "no" without reasonable explanation or even" not my cup of tea" or something.

How about putting a "I would really appreciate it if you comment along with voting. Even a one-liner will help" kind of note before the piece, Imaginary? Might move some of the anonymous voters to comment. You won't know until you try.

The critique is more important than the votes because that's all that DWL was made for. The polls should stay but not at the expense of having anonymous critiques or limited ones. People  must stand for what they say (good or bad); accountability is critical. If anyone is sensitive enough (like in recent times) to not be able to take things well, then they should ensure their post is in the right forum.

One minor update: just applied a mod that lets you click the '...' for pages to expand the numbers and click the one you'd like to go to. I was aiming for that thing that's often found in Invision powered forums where you can type the page you'd like to jump to. Oh well.

If anyone wants any more mods for the site, put em up here. Smiley

ETA: Also applied a mod that lets new users upload their avatar during registration, so should their application be approved, they don't need to edit their profiles. Am working on getting the display name on registration up and running, also.

Just a quick update: some users have been reporting cookie and/or session issues, and after some research, it seems this is an SMF related issue, which is resulting from some issue the recent security patch seems to have put in place. I'm sorry to say there's nothing I can do until and unless another patch isn't released fixing this problem.

Apologies for the inconvenience. That said, the problems have been resolved in some instances by switching from Internet Explorer to either Chrome or Firefox.

So everyone who's facing this issue: please sit tight. Help will (hopefully) be on the way soon. Sigh.

Added a new board for new members to introduce themselves a little...saw it in place in another writers forum and thought it was a lovely way to break the ice especially for our new members.

If its takes off, why not keep it? If it doesn't, we'll just scratch it...thoughts? Smiley

Yes, the introduce yourself section was the first thing I searched for around here. I was quite surprised when I didn't find it...Great idea Smiley
